Come out help us preserve the history of Kernersville. All necessary supplies will be provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to lend a hand. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community, connect with fellow young professionals, and make a positive impact on our historic cemetery.
St. Paul's Cemetery, Kernersville's historic burial ground for the Black community prior to the Civil War, became the site of the first Black place of worship in the area in 1873. After the war, Black members of the Methodist Episcopal Church established St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church and moved their building to the cemetery site. Though the church no longer stands, the cemetery remains. A census identified nearly 200 graves in St. Paul's Cemetery, listed on a memorial plaque near the entrance. Many graves are marked by unmarked field stones placed by family members, a custom before the use of tombstones. These stones are primarily found at the front of the cemetery.
We look forward to seeing you there and working together to keep Kernersville beautiful and its history intact!
