December Business of the Month

Posted By: Ashley Sinclair Business of the Month,

Congratulations to our December 2024 Business of the Month - Smitty's Grille

Sponsored by the Kernersville News and Kernersville Chamber

This month we recognize a staple of the Kernersville community since 2005 for its excellent culture and fine food. Soon to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Smitty’s Grille on South Main Street, has served hearts and minds with delicious fare and signature drinks to help bring people together through food.

Craig Smith, a Navy veteran, opened Smitty’s in June of 2005 with the goal of providing great food along with a great atmosphere for the people of the Triad. Craig (known as Smitty) had a vision in which the partners supported to get the organization off the ground. While Smitty has since continued the endeavor solo, he acknowledges the partners of the restaurant for their contribution to the success of Smitty’s.

Smitty’s provides an All-American menu specializing in its Crab Dip, Wings, Seafood, and Steak. Head Chef, Phil Uselman keeps the menu fresh, delivering awesome flavors to enjoy without being overpowering. Patrons will immediately feel at home as House Managers, Lane Smith and Madison Celi have led and maintained an experienced staff that provides exceptional service to new and returning customers. Smitty credits his staff with providing the best experience in town, allowing him to spend more time with his family, especially his 4-year-old granddaughter Autumn. “I have paid my dues to the restaurant business, I stay involved strategically.  I am fortunate to hire good people and they stay with me. They have made Smitty’s what it is, and now I can relax… a little.”

Smitty’s Grille is heavily involved in the Kernersville community. Some of their known involvements are with Eating for Education, Shephard’s Center, Kernersville Kiwanis Club and Kernersville Chamber Golf Tournament. Smitty says, “It’s important to support and celebrate the community that provides for you. We don’t do it for accolades, we do it because we believe in helping others and reducing the negativity in the world.” The Chamber is a great partner to work with on these projects, they have been instrumental in the success of Smitty’s.  When asked about expanding or other business endeavors, Smitty says, “I have done a lot in my years, I am not looking to retire, but I am not looking to take on more either.”

When asked if he has any advice for small business owners, Smitty commented, “Any business is never going to run 100% the way you want. Some things you are going to have to compromise on and as long as you are achieving your goals, how you get there can be negotiable.”
